Lake Kournas is an important wetland, one of the few areas in Crete where there is abundant fresh water throughout the year. Its current name derives from the Arabic word for lake.
The next stop will be at Georgioupolis. Georgioupolis is a picturesque village located about 100 km west of Heraklion. Its original name was Almyroupolis but in order to honor Prince George of Greece who arrived in Crete in 1899 to sanction the union of the island with Greece, it was renamed Georgioupolis.
The final stop will be the Old Town of Rethymnon, one of the best-preserved towns of the Renaissance. Lying in the heart of modern Rethymnon, it combines the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance-style Venetian architecture.

It was the seat of the lord-King who controlled not only the rich plain of Messara but also the settlements in the area, and the harbors of Messara Bay. In the middle of the 2nd century BC. it was captured and destroyed by the neighboring city of Gortyn.

In about 1650 BC, a new palace was built on the same site and with the same layout. Following the fate of the other palaces in Crete it was also destroyed in 1450 BC. Most of the ruins visible today belong to the second palace complex.
Our next stop will be the small fishing village of Plaka, where visitors will take a boat to Spinalonga, which is located in the Gulf of Elounda, in north-eastern Crete.
In 1578 the Venetians built on Spinalonga a strong fortress in accordance with the fortification practice of the bastion system on the ruins of an ancient castle. The island was captured by the Turks in 1715. At the end of the 19th century, the port of Spinalonga was granted an export-trading license and began to flourish. The life of the settlement was abruptly disrupted by the political upheaval of the last years of the 19th century.
The island was subsequently used as a leper colony for the first half of the 20th century. Today, the uninhabited island is a popular tourist attraction in Crete.
